History / Our Story
In the 1950’s, Antonio Giordano regularly met with migrants from Italy and Yugoslavia at the Mocca Bar on the corner of Hindley and Morphett street, which was then known as ‘Little Italy’. It was here that language and culture came together.
Antonio was an ardent supporter and advocate of Italian traditions and he held strong views on the need for welfare support for South Australia’s Italian community.
The lack of support services for new arrivals and Antonio’s constant advocacy for such services eventually led to the establishment of ANFE – Associazione Nazionale Famiglie degli Emigrati Incorporated in Adelaide in 1961.
ANFE was the first of its kind, independent from the Italian Consulate and Australian Government, set up by the Italian community with the purpose of assisting newly-arrived Italians.
Volunteers within the Italian community joined the organisation and these individuals became the foundation on which the needs of the community were addressed. This support has continued for over 60 years.
Our success has been achieved with the dedication of management, staff, volunteers, and the generous support of funding bodies, sponsors, donors and members carrying on a legacy of culture and care.
